Self-healing polymer materials in the form of films or coatings hold great promise within the food packaging industry, due to their unique ability to repair and restore their surface integrity and characteristics by themselves when they are damaged. Packages are usually inevitably and imperceptibly damaged during transportation, handling and storage and in this case, the damaged parts of common packages, which lack self-healing ability, will be prone to microbial growth due to exposure to the environment and this issue may endanger the quality and safety of food products. Within the realm of food packaging research, self-healing films and coatings have been developed using both intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms; The former involves non-automatic self-healing in the presence of an external stimulus, while the latter mechanism enables automatic self-repair. In this study, self-healing mechanisms and the associated films and coatings have been explored and the feasibility and benefits of incorporating these materials into the realm of food packaging have been investigated. It is noteworthy that, to date, self-healing films and coatings have primarily been developed and studied at the laboratory scale and for scientific research purposes. Moreover, recent review articles have rarely considered the real-world industrial limitations associated with improving the practical application of these films and coatings in food packaging. Therefore, unlike previous studies, this study also addresses the specific challenges of the industry related to the development of self-healing packaging and emphasizes the importance of these issues.
