Volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI) is a compound or a mixture that has the ability to vaporize at normal temperature and to condense on a metallic surface in order to prevent its corrosion. In this work, polymer films containing volatile corrosion inhibitors have been investigated. Polymer films containing corrosion inhibitors have proved to be economical and reliable means of anticorrosion protection of metals. In order to be used effectively, the volatile corrosion inhibitors must be compatible with the metals to be protected and the environment, economically cheap operation, easily applied and must have greatest desirable effect in protecting the metallic surfaces from corrosion. Accordingly, corrosion inhibitors and their anticorrosion mechanism are introduced and corrosion inhibitor films are classified by different criteria. Mixing of corrosion inhibitor with the polymer base is considered to be the most important operation that governs anticorrosion properties of the film material. The choice of method for introduction of corrosion inhibitor is predetermined by the corrosion inhibitor properties, volatility, thermal resistance and compatibility with the polymer base. Therefore, methods of combining corrosion inhibitors with polymer films by film blowing extrusion were introduced. Also, methods of packaging of protective films, quality parameters and requirements are evaluated. The advantage of these vapor phase corrosion inhibitors is that the vaporized molecules can reach hard-to-reach sites.
