Cellulose is the main constituent of more plants. The renewability of this material has made it a natural raw material which is abundant and also left no concern about the completion of its resources. However, industrial application of cellulose as a thermoplastic polymer is associated with some problems and difficulties. For example, due to the presence of strong hydrogen bonds between its chains, the cellulose is destroyed before it is melted. In order to eliminate such difficulties, researchers have developed celluloses derivatives. Ethyl cellulose is one of the most widely used cellulose derivative polymers. Today, cellulose derivative polymers, such as ethyl cellulose in particular, are widely used in numerous industries like ceramic manufacturing, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, tobacco, paint, paper, food, textile, various molding parts and printing ink. Renewability, biocompatibility, and in some cases the biodegradability of this polymer along with its high tensile strength and proper toughness, has led this polymer to play a prominent role in polymer science and technology in the future. This paper is written with introduction of ethylcellulose and reviewing its various characteristics, in order to further recognition the Iranian polymer community with this unique polymer. It is hoped that this goal is met and we will see more attention in this polymer in our country.
