Polymeric solar cells are a relatively new generation of photovoltaics that have received much attention in recent years. This generation of solar cells has a great potential for commercialization and production on an industrial scale due to advantages such as the abundance of raw materials, the ability to produce different colors according to customer demand, flexibility, light weight and low production cost. To commercialize the polymeric solar cells, it is important to evaluate the costs and economic aspects of their industrial production, and few studies have been done till now. This paper estimates the cost of raw materials, production process, and the installation of the electricity generating systems based on polymeric solar cells. The results of this study show that despite the lower solar energy conversion efficiency by these systems, because of their adaptability to the roll-to-roll process, their cost is very low and not only compete with the commercial products like silicon based solar cells also with other electricity generating systems such as wind and water based ones. The cost of laboratory scale preparation of polymer solar cells in a domestic level are also included in the review to highlight any difference comes from regional and social aspects.
