Abstract

Plasticizers are crucial components in the polymer industry, as they significantly enhance the mechanical and thermal properties of rigid polymers and improve their processability. This paper examines the chemical mechanisms of plasticizers, with a focus on dioctyl phthalate (DOP), and their effects on polymer flexibility, elasticity, and durability. By reducing polymer fragility, plasticizers broaden the range of industrial applications for these materials. However, synthetic plasticizers, such as phthalates, pose serious environmental and health risks due to their potential toxicity and persistence in ecosystems. In response, this research investigates bioplasticizers derived from renewable resources as more sustainable alternatives. Bioplasticizers are assessed based on their performance in comparison to traditional plasticizers and their potential to mitigate environmental risks. This paper also examines regulatory frameworks that increasingly restrict harmful substances like phthalates and promote the use of biodegradable emollients, such as vegetable oils. While bioplasticizers comply with regulatory standards and retain the beneficial properties of polymers, challenges related to cost-effectiveness and industrial scalability remain unresolved. This study reviews recent advancements in plasticizer technology, emphasizing the need for further research and development to optimize these formulations. Ultimately, it concludes that achieving a balance among technical performance, environmental safety, and regulatory compliance will be essential for driving greener and more efficient innovations in industrial applications.
